Where Does Depression Come From?
Consider the following areas of your life. Could any of them use changes, or need attention?
SOURCES OF DEPRESSION:
-Negative thought patterns and beliefs
-self
-life
-others
-Lack of meaning/purpose/goals.
-Disconnection from people / isolation or felt isolation
-No behavioral activation / activities / mastery / structure
-Bad / toxic environment
-Not enough positive experiences
-Relationship problems / negative patterns/reactions
-Memories – sad/difficult/traumatic/fearful/angry (anger turned inward)
-Not enough catharsis – talking / journaling / creative outlet
-Conflicted/ambivalent beliefs/thoughts/feelings.
-Disappointment or loss, and especially subsequent negative self-talk
-Inappropriate expectations and assumptions, for self and others
-Illness or incapacitation
-Feeling trapped, without choices
-Sense of no control / helpless
-Substance abuse
-No exercise / body movement
-Sleep problems
-Life events – e.g. divorce, moving
-Malnutrition
-Other psychological problems – e.g. anxiety, psychosis
